  • This paper reports on 2D measurements of combustion-related luminosity taken in optically accessible engines. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is conducted on the recorded data. POD is applied first to the low-order reconstruction of acquired images, then to the interpolation of missing image frames, then finally to the analysis of cycle variability. In the spark ignition engine, images are collected and POD coupled with interpolation to reconstruct information in between consecutive measurements. Next, dynamic in-cylinder pressure data collected together with images are compared to those of a “base” cycle and the differences are used to weight the “snapshots” collected over different cycles: By this means, pseudo-cycle-resolved image sequences can be obtained. In the Diesel engine, cycle-to-cycle variations are observed by analysing images of the combustion process. The method is used to separate the mean from the coherent and the incoherent part of the fluctuation of the luminosity field, in a non-truncated representation of the data. The statistical analysis may be run on a small number of scalar coefficients rather than on the full data set of pixel-valued luminosity. (literal)
