Cnr and JHU team study reveals astrocyte morphogenesis with optical diffraction tomography

News 10/02/2025

A study by an international research team has demonstrated the use of Optical Diffraction Tomography to analyze the dynamic morphology of astrocytes, key neural support cells. Conducted by scientists from the Cnr and the Johns Hopkins University, the study showcases this technique as a label-free, high-resolution imaging technique that allows real-time observation of astrocyte shape changes without interfering with their natural behavior. By generating 3D refractive index maps, the method provides insights into cell volume, dry mass, and surface area, marking its first application to neural cells. This breakthrough offers new opportunities to study astrocyte function, development, and interactions in various environments
