Dante’s Commedia is the only major work of Italian literature that, since its earliest circulation, has always been accompanied by commentaries. These ancient Dantean commentaries not only attest to the extraordinary vitality of the poem among its contemporaries but also represent a significant moment in Italy’s cultural and linguistic history.
Today, on the occasion of “Dantedì 2025” – the national day dedicated to Dante Alighieri – the first digital database of ancient commentaries on the Commedia is being released: the Corpus CoDA – Corpus dei commenti danteschi antici. This database currently contains 67 texts, totaling 4,975,798 occurrences, and is freely accessible online to the public. Each text in the database is accompanied by a concise descriptive form, all collected in the first digital bibliography of Dantean commentaries, the BCD - Bibliografia dei commenti danteschi.
The Corpus CoDA and the BCD are just the first tools being developed as part of a broader project dedicated to the ancient exegesis of Dante’s work. This initiative is the result of the close collaboration between the University of Naples "Federico II", the CNR Institute - Opera del Vocabolario Italiano (OVI), and Sapienza University of Rome and is carried out within the framework of a PRIN 2022 project.
Both tools aim to enhance research on Dante and, more generally, on ancient Italian texts, with potential applications in the field of education, with potential applications in secondary education. They are part of the resources that the OVI-CNR makes available to the scientific community, including the Tesoro della Lingua Italiana delle Origini (TLIO) and, in collaboration with the Accademia della Crusca, the Vocabolario Dantesco (VD). Moreover, the Corpus CoDA is integrated into the Naples Dante Project (NDP), the most extensive online aggregator of Dantean textual and illustrative traditions, promoted by the University of Naples "Federico II".
