Abstract

oWater4Crops is an Indo-European collaborative project aimed at finding solutions for emerging water, energy and related problems for achieving sustainable development in Europe and India
oWater4Crops is executed as twin projects 'Water4Crops-EU'and 'Water4Crops-lndia'addressing identical objectives by adopting similar methodologies and structure in terms of Work Packages (WP)
oWater4Crops addresses the European Commission's Framework Programme 7 (FP7) Topic 'Biotechnological Wastewater Treatments and Reuse in Agronomical Systems'
oThe twin projects commenced in the second quarter of 2012 and will end in 2016
Key Objectives of Water4Crops include:
oDevelop innovative bio-technological wastewater treatments for enhancing wastewater reuse in agriculture
oInitiate the co-creation of innovative combinations of bio-treatment recycling of water and high-value products, and combinations for bio-products leading to better commercialization of biotechnology and agricultural products in Europe and India as a basis for 'Green Growth'
oImprove water use efficiency through improved agronomics, plant breeding and new irrigation technologies
oEnhance stakeholder participation.

Goals

The Water4Cops specific objectives are:

a)To develop innovative biotechnological wastewater treatments for improved water use in agriculture.
b)To initiate the co-creation of alternative combinations of bio-treatment, recycling of high value elements, and combinations for bioproducts leading to a better commercialization of biotechnology and agricultural products in Europe and India as a basis for Green Growth.
c)To improve water use efficiency at field level through agronomics, plant breeding and locally adapted new irrigation technologies and accurate crop water requirement measurement techniques.
d)To facilitate and enhance the stakeholder participation (technology producers, technology users, retailers, and regulators), activities coordination and exchange of information within the INNOVA co-creation platforms and beyond.
e)To use the collaborative research with India as means towards food and water security and enabling mutual strive of India and Europe towards a Green Economy.
