Abstract

LIFE PHOENIX project aims at demonstrating how a new interinstitutional governance system,
supported through innovative forecast tools based on ongoing monitoring, can manage risks related to
the diffusion of persistent mobile organic contaminants (PMOC) - with a particular focus on
PerFluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) - more effectively and efficiently. This system will help avoid or
at least reduce public expenditure on damages caused by persistent emerging pollutants, which
represent a big threat for citizens' health (through drinking and irrigation water).
Project specific objectives include:
- Settling a Permanent Regional Commission for PFAS supported by a Multidisciplinary Experts' Panel to
implement policy measures and actions to prevent or limit problems related to contamination from
PMOC in general;
- Preparing guidelines on how to face the problems related to contamination from PMOC and risk
prevention;
- Providing well-timed and innovative environmental tools for the estimation of PMOC distribution and
risks (early-warning tools)
