Roll Up BioPlastics Europe

The National Research Council of Italy (Cnr), with its research Institutes Ipcb, Scitec and Ibf - is partner of "Bioplastics Europe", a european project  coordinated by HAW Hamburg, involving 21 partners from 10 European countries and 1 extra-EU partner (H2020 Project No. 860407).  The project aims at defining and developing sustainable strategies and new solutions towards bioplastics-based products, as well as at outlining circular approaches for the bioplastics supply chain. The consortium working at the European project represents an influential task force which provides a variety of competences coming from research organizations, trade associations, universities and companies.

Within this context, the Italian partnership of the Consortium represented by Cnr, Assobioplastiche, Ticass and Università di Bologna, is organizing an "Italian Online Conference" about "Renewable, biodegradable and compostable Plastics". The Conference represents a good opportunity to study in depth the relevant issues of the project through evidence from the economic, institutional and academic sectors and from local territories, whilst offering an opportunity for confrontation and interaction to anybody willing to engage, and allowing for critical or strength points, failings, necessities and desiderata to emerge.

The Italian Online Conference will take place on a Zoom platform and will be organized as follows:

Tuesday, 24 November – Circular Bioeconomy

Aim of this morning is to collect information and clues regarding the overall Italian framework in connection with the challenges posed by a Circular Economy, to describe various models of Circular Economy comparing resources squandering factors which could be used towards the fight against climate change, particularly through the strengthening of soil fertility,  to highlight the national circularity champions who have managed to reach good goals and opened the way to innovative models representing an example of Italy within Europe.

Wednesday, 25 November – Uses in the Agrifood sector

According to Responsible Research and Innovation, the second day promotes the values, needs and aspirations of society, from firms to sector consortia and citizens as stakeholders. Through evidence coming from both research and traders, we will propose stimuli and considerations on the state of the art of innovative solutions offered by bio-based, compostable and biodegradable bioplastics. The discussion aims at defining the strategic role that such materials can play in the contexts of agro-food applications, as food packaging and products for agriculture, whilst maintaining high standards of security for human beings, of environmental eco-sustainability and of circular economy.

Thursday, 26 November – Business Models for Sustainability

The presence of plastics in the seas, along with a growing awareness in consumers, has boosted the demand for bio-based and compostable plastics, which, if correctly employed, may result into natural fertilizer, after appropriate industrial composting processes. This feature allows for a variety of applications including those in the food packaging sector. There are plenty of demonstrations on the market at present. We will discuss these issues with experts, and we will describe how Italy is showing a clear vision of how bioeconomy may contribute to the current production and consumption system.

The 3-day programme, attached as pdf file, is organized as a collection of recent relevant issues, knowing that Europe is asking us for clear guidelines and adequate laws.

By registering to the conference, you may be involved by both listening to the talks as well as directly contributing through the Q&A session.
