PS-U-GO 2nd Training Event
PS-U-GO 2nd Training Event

From April 9 to 11, the second PS-U-GO Training Event will take place in Naples (Italy), bringing together students, researchers, and local stakeholders for a three-day immersive experience dedicated to Urban Living Labs (ULLs), spatial justice, and collective urban practices. The event is co-organized within the framework of the ERASMUS+ project “Education in Living Labs: Participatory Skills for sustainable Urban Governance” by Cnr Iriss, the Department of Architecture of the University of Naples Federico II, the DiARC Evaluation Laboratory, Lido Pola Bene Comune and the project partner SF:ius.

The training will combine theoretical reflections with situated practices and urban explorations, aiming to strengthen collaboration across disciplines and countries. The program will open on April 9 at the premises of DiARC and Cnr Iriss with “energizer” activities and a round of presentations of ULLs experiences from the partner cities (Naples, Palermo, Nicosia and Cottbus), involving both students and ULL responsibles. The afternoon will be dedicated to the second Transnational Project Meeting for partners, while students will have free time to explore the city.

On April 10, participants will engage in a curated exploration of the Bagnoli area, a post-industrial neighborhood rich in contested transformations and grassroots initiatives. The group will explore key sites including Villa Medusa–Casa del Popolo, the Pontile Nord, and the Circolo Ilva, followed by a collective lunch at Lido Pola, an emblematic urban commons space that plays a key role in reclaiming and regenerating the Bagnoli area. In the afternoon, students will participate in hands-on group work and a discussion titled “Protagonism through Everyday Politics”, reflecting on their experiences and the potential for civic engagement in urban regeneration processes.

The final day, April 11, will feature a curated exploration along the Caracciolo seawalk, from Rotonda Diaz to Monte Echia and the Touristic Port, showcasing another layer of Naples' urban landscape. In the afternoon, students and partners will share preliminary ideas for future project outputs and participate in a collective feedback session at DiARC.

To further enrich the training experience, the event is complemented by two open lectures held before and after the core training days. On April 8, Prof. Silke Weidner (BTU Cottbus–Senftenberg, Germany) presented “Integrated Urban Development Concepts in the context of the EU Leipzig Charter”, offering insights into integrated planning approaches, structural transitions, and participatory practices in urban and rural settings. On April 12, Hendrik Weiner (BTU Cottbus–Senftenberg) will deliver a session titled “From explorative teaching projects to urban living labs – hybrid settings for a new public-civil cooperation”, exploring hybrid formats of engaged learning and co-design rooted in real-world experimentation and collective urban action. Both lectures are held within the framework of the “Evaluation and Professional Practice” course taught by Prof. Maria Cerreta (DiARC Federico II and member of the Italian PS-U-GO research team).

The Naples Training Event will provide a vibrant platform to exchange methodologies and reflections on participatory urbanism, fostering a translocal network of engaged practitioners and researchers.

Training activities are reserved for ULL students and project partners; the two lectures are open to the public.
