Abstract

The observable and quantifiable sedimentary processes acting on decadal to centennial time scales have been largely overlooked by stratigraphers and have never been incorporated in longer-term,
high-resolution sequence-stratigraphic models. As a result, the internal configuration of sediment packages in the rock record has been predominantly conceptualized rather than documented.
The proposed research project (PASS) aims at establishing a framework in which different disciplines are combined in a unified working procedure that integrates for the first time sequence stratigraphy, sediment provenance and a quantitative assessment of modern sedimentary processes. PASS will quantitatively assess sediment fluxes across a ~1,000 km long, source-to-sink system by applying a multiscale sequence-stratigraphic method to the chronologically well-constrained, post-glacial succession of the Po-Adriatic region.

Obiettivi

PASS aims at establishing a framework in which different disciplines (sedimentology, stratigraphy, paleontology, physical oceanography, geochemistry) are combined in a unified working procedure that integrates for the first time high-resolution sequence stratigraphy with a quantitative assessment of modern sedimentary processes. Our goal is to quantitatively assess sediment fluxes across the ~1000 km long, mud-prone, source-to-sink Po-Adriatic system by applying a multiscale sequence-stratigraphic method (from systems tract to parasequence and bedset) to the chronologically well-constrained Holocene succession. To achieve this, specific research objectives are to: i) identify basin-wide, key sequence-stratigraphic surfaces, through calibration between seismic stratigraphic units and their core counterparts, ii) define the 3D-geometry of major lithofacies assemblages and quantify their volumes, iii) outline how sediment is generated, transported, temporarily stored, and delivered to the offshore sink, based on documented, rather than inferred, reconstructions of sediment sources and sediment transport pathways.
