The National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and Carbfix, a world leader in Carbon Capture and Mineral Storage (CCMS) technology, have signed a Strategic Agreement to promote innovative research into cutting-edge technologies that can mitigate climate change and support a sustainable energy future.
CNR is largest public research institution in Italy with multidisciplinary expertise. Founded in 1923, its mission is to carry out scientific research in all major fields of knowledge and to apply the results to promote the country’s development. Its extensive research portfolio includes studies in geosciences, chemistry and engineering, with a focus on energy transition technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), CCMS, and Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), as well as Critical Raw Materials and renewable energy sources such as geothermal, solar and wind energy, bioenergy, green hydrogen, and white hydrogen.
Carbfix, a pioneer in CCMS technology, has been at the forefront of converting CO? into stable minerals for permanent underground storage. The company operates the world’s first industrial-scale CCMS hub in Iceland, where it has successfully demonstrated its patented mineralization process to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Since its launch as a research project in 2007, Carbfix has expanded its activities through partnerships with universities, research institutions, and industrial players worldwide. Carbfix is also committed to promoting workplace inclusivity, gender balance, and equality, which ensures that diverse views are part of the journey towards climate recovery.
The partnership CNR-Carbfix builds on the Horizon 2020 GECO project, which marked the beginning of a strong collaboration between the two organisations and established a basis for advancing innovative solutions in carbon capture and energy technologies.
The CNR President Maria Chiara Carrozza stated: “I am very proud to announce this strategic collaboration with Carbfix, a world-class partner in mineralogical carbon capture and storage. This alliance represents a significant step towards the integration of innovative technologies that will contribute to decarbonization and drive the global energy transition. Through the synergy between advanced scientific research and industrial applications, Cnr strengthens its commitment to combating climate change and promoting sustainable solutions for a low-carbon future”.
Carbfix CEO Edda Sif Pind Aradóttir added: “The Carbfix technology sprouted from international science collaboration almost 20 years ago and there has been great progress since in implementing and scaling the technology . But our core still is research & innovation, which our partnership with CNR will further support, benefitting climate action and recovery”.
Through this Research Agreement, CNR and Carbfix will focus on advancing CCMS and CCUS technologies, the potential integration of mineral carbon capture with sustainable geothermal energy solutions, hydrogen production and for net-zero industries in the “hard to abate” sector. This partnership also prioritizes knowledge transfer and capacity building, and promotion of training opportunities for young researchers and PhD candidates. By establishing international research networks and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, the partnership aims to strengthen global cooperation in climate and energy innovation, making meaningful contribution to the transition to a low-carbon economy.
